High School Stats:
J. Legend began his basketball career officially in 8th grade, when he tried out for the Junior Varsity squad in 1987 and was cut for primarily being too short. At barely 5' 0" J. Legend was a mere mouse compared to other players, but that did not discourage him. He took a position on the Varsity as the team manager and although his duties were relegated to passing out towels instead of assists, he did get to practice with the team and he snatched the opportunity to do so.
The next season J. Legend was granted a roster spot on the Varsity team to backup the starting point guard. Midway through the season the starting point guard, Jason Shanley, broke his arm and was out for the remainder of the season. J. Legend stepped to the plate for his team and the rest is history as they say. He was named Freshman of the Year by averaging 12.4ppg and 6.1ast, for the North Star League after only playing in 10 games, J. Legend then went on to leave his mark on the North Star League. As Captain of the NICH Royals he averaged 22.3pts and 11.6rebs in his Junior season to earn League MVP honors. He averaged 25.2pts and 10.2rebs in his senior year to help lead his team to the Quarterfinals of the state tournament. J. Legend graduated in 1991 with career marks of 19.6ppg, 8.6rpg, and 7.2apg. He left the Royals as their career leader in scoring, rebounding, assists, free throw percentage (88.7%) and 3pt percentage (46.4%). He also was a 4-time All-Star selection and set league records with most points scored in a single season with 447pts in 1990, most points scored in a 1st round playoff game with 33pts in 1990, highest free throw percentage for a season 91% in 1990, and most 3pt shots made in a game with 7 in 1990.
College Stats:
After turning down offers to play at several Junior Colleges in the Northwest, J. Legend had decided he wanted to play at a 4yr NCAA University. He enrolled at George Fox University in the fall of 1991 and attempted to "walk on" to the Varsity Basketball team. Little to his dismay, after a lengthy tryout preseason he was cut. The same fate would find him the next year after similar tryouts and J. Legend had all but given up his dream to play at the college level. During the summer he worked relentlessly on his outside shooting and dribbling and finally made the squad in 1994. For the next 3 seasons J. Legend would go from 12th man at the end of the bench to a starter by his Senior season. In 1995 he was named George Fox University's Most Inspirational Athlete. In his final collegiate game J. Legend showed the poise of a true veteran. Playing against Concordia University with a minute left in regulation and GFU holding on to a 2pt lead, J. Legend stole a pass on consecutive Concordia possessions, then was fouled on both and sent to the charity stripe, where he calmly knocked down 4 consecutive free throws in the closing seconds to secure the victory. He graduated in 1997 with Bachelors of Arts Degree in Communications and basketball career marks of 10ppg, 4.6rpg and 4.3ast.
Pro Stats:
After being drafted in the 5th round by the San Diego Clippers, J. Legend opted not to sign with the Clippers and under the league rules along with the collective bargaining agreement at the time, he began his own expansion club known as the Cash Money Brothers. Originally established back in 1991, the CMB was not recognized as an official Franchise until 1993. J. Legend working as a General Manager and player, came out of the gates blazing in his rookie season by averaging 17.7ppg and 6.2ast. He was voted Schick Rookie of The Year, and help lead his team to it's first of 3 consecutive Finals championships.
Now entering his 17th season, J. Legend shows no signs of age. In 2006 and 2007 he helped the CMB rise from a 4th place playoff finish in 2002, to a few notches higher just a few seasons later. This past season he helped lead the CMB to back-to-back titles and they are on pace to Three-Peat (CTC Pat Riley) heading back in the right direction toward yet another Finals. Back in 2002 he was coming off one of his best seasons yet in which he was named League MVP and lead the league in scoring, free throw percentage and 3pt percentage. In 2006 he won his 6th MVP award for his career, tying legendary PCBL'er G. Murph, by leading the league in 3pt percentage and rising to 2nd in scoring. Well in 2008 he added yet another unprecedented 7th MVP award to his mantle, in which he averaged double-digit rebounds for the first time in his career for a season (10.3rpg) and also led the league for a 4th time in 3pt percentage (66.7%.) He was also named to his 17th consecutive All-Star appearance in 2008.
